What I Did Today

Here's a detail of a custom cartoon I finished this morning:

Snippet

Often when I do color I find myself doing a LOT of little details. I dunno why exactly, but it's kinda relaxing...

(BTW, that's a person doing yoga in the front there.)

Carl Fontana - My Trombone Hero

There's been a fair bit of commenting in the Frank Lloyd Wright entry about brass and jazz (go figure!), and it got me looking around online for some info on my trombone hero, Carl Fontana.

I'm just overjoyed at the amazing material I was able to dig up! I'm busy downloading a slew of great trombone videos, so I'll let this clip speak for me:

Follow That Cartoon (Part 6)

Welcome back to Follow That Cartoon! A series of entries in which I track the creation, submissions, and, hopefully, the sale of this cartoon:

5922 1

So last time I reported that this had been passed over by Reader's Digest. The good news, though, was I sold two other cartoons to them, so it's kinda hard to complain.

Anyway, this shipped out again this morning to Harvard Business Review. I don't think it has a chance in hell of being purchased there (it really doesn't fit their content), but I've been wrong before.

In any case, HBR sees most of my stuff right after the Digest, so we'll see what happens.

BTW, a fond farewell to the current/former cartoon submissions editor at HBR. She was just wonderful to work with, and was kind enough to drop me a lovely farewell note this morning. Here's my favorite part:

I have one up in my cube right now, of two hunters warily surveying a bear with a heart taped to his chest: “Careful, Don. Maybe he’s a Care Bear and maybe he ain’t.” It’s one of my favorites and makes me smile every time I glance over at it.

That's what every cartoonist hopes for, I think. It's what Lynn Johnston called "fridge space" when I met her a few years back. To know that someone liked your cartoon enough to cut it out and tape it up somewhere... That's the best compliment you can get.

Anyway, I'll letcha know when it gets rejected...

Wright On!

So the Mrs. and I were lucky enough to have one more day out together (thanks to her folks) before we take the back-to-school-and-taking-care-of-the-kids-while-juggling-cartooning plunge.

We're lucky enough to live pretty close to an embarrassing amount of Frank Lloyd Wright homes, including his first home and studio:

As well as Unity Temple, one of Wright's favorite commissions:

Unfortunately, the groundbreaking poured concrete is showing some wear:

I'm pretty sure Wright didn't design these:

I also picked up this new addition to my office at a nearby store:

Cartoon Info Released Into Wild

I'm happy to announce another new feature on everyone's favorite cartoon website, Andertoons.com!

On each cartoon's individual page, there's now a good chunk of information pertaining to that cartoon immediately underneath it:

Newstuffblog1

For example, this cartoon is #4024, belongs to the Animal Cartoons, Business Cartoons & Office Cartoons topics, has eleven tags attached (crabs, walking, sideways, lateral, promotions, work, jobs, business, corporate, animals, seafood), has been previously published in Reader's Digest, and lists the caption.

OK, you're saying, big deal. A lot of info that doesn't really help me.

But it does...

Look closely and you'll see that each topic and keyword is actually a link. Click on, say, "promotions," and you'll get this:

Newstuffblog2

Click on "seafood" instead, and you'll get this:

Newstuffblog3

Neat, huh?

Of course, this information haas always been part of the site – it's been working diligently behind the scenes for years in the search box. But, it's been suggested that information wants to be free, and who am I to argue.

This new searchability will allow users to drill down to exactly what they're looking for quickly and easily, no matter how obscure their desired result may be.

Enjoy the new feature, and have some fun just browsing around.

Dark Tower Comics

Darktower

I ran across a poster for this at Wizard World Chicago, and I gotta say, I'm intrigued.

This from the Marvel site:

World Fantasy Award-winning writer Stephen King, long acknowledged as the master of modern horror, and Marvel Comics join forces this spring to launch a ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from King's magnum opus, The Dark Tower.

The comic series will mark the first time Stephen King has produced original content for an ongoing comic book project. The series will expand the saga of King’s epic hero, Roland Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven best-selling novels published over the course of twenty-five years. King’s unparalleled storytelling power will inform new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga’s mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

I'm a big fan of King's Dark Tower stuff, although I've found it hard to find the time to read the last three or so. I'm really curious to see how this pans out.

Cartoons Go Cold Turkey

GroupTurner Broadcasting is going back into its Hanna-Barbera holdings and systematically editing certain references to smoking.

The review was triggered by a complaint to British media regulator Ofcom by one viewer who took offence to two episodes of Tom and Jerry shown on the Boomerang channel, part of Turner Broadcasting which itself belongs to Time Warner Inc.

One viewer?! Yeesh!

In order to avoid entanglements with an as of yet unnamed English professor, Warner Brothers is also reported to be considering changing Bugs Bunny's trademark slang from "What's up, Doc?" to the more correct "Hello."

It's Not Easy Writing Green

KarlspotIf Mark Heath were a cop, not only would he play by his own rules, he'd probably alphabetize them and pick out a really nice font.

Check out Mark's blog about contemplating breaking his own Spot the Frog rules. It's the kind of blog I love to read – a much deeper look into what cartoonists think about.

And go read Spot, dagnabbit!

(BTW, the green font isn't an error. After writing that title I got a little goofy with my blogging software. It's been a long day and I'm a little tired and punchy. So sue me.)

Connect My Dots

Ran into this over at Drawn! the other day:

Blog

Andertoons

No, it's not some sort of biologically-inspired pointillism, it's a site that graphs HTML in a really (I almost hesitate to say it) pretty way.

The graph on top is everyone's favorite cartoon blog, and the bottom one is everyone's favorite cartoon website.

Check it out!
