Those bells have that "gradient fill Photoshopped look." They probably aren't, of course, but they look it.

The damn thing is that it probably is not McManus' actual, own work. He had assistants through the years -- as did (and still do) many big cartoonists. This could be the work of a (very talented) ghost.
